For my next reading blog I wanted to look at virtual reality. It is an interest of mine, but I am also skeptical about it because of the idea itself. The article I looked at went into the benefits of virtual reality and the dangers of it. I remember when virtual reality was really starting to become mainstream. Everyone wanted the new oculus rift so they could try the new immersive games coming out. One of my friends got one and it was awesome. Which is one of the benefits. A new way to play video games or just connect with other people. Another dimension of the online world was unlocked because of this. Seeing peoples whole bodies move instead of just a character's head moving with the rest following. I do love the idea of being transported to a completely different world that you can interact with. However, the article does make some claims about why virtual reality can be harmful. To start it mentioned that children can have a hard time determining what is actually real and what is virtual. They could experience something in virtual reality and believe it is actually real. Another problem was desensitization. People could become so engulfed with their fake world that nothing would have any meaning anymore. Or if it were a violent videogame the serious actions that happen in it would not be a concern. I do believe that these things can happen, but it happens in regular video games too even if virtual reality is much more immersive and interactive than regular games. https://technologyandsociety.org/virtual-reality-ethical-challenges-and-dangers/
