As a person who is classified as gen z I already knew that social media has drastically changed our world even before reading this article. The moment everything changed in my time is when I was in 6th grade. Before that as a kid the only connection you had with your friends was at school or after school activities and then hanging out in person. It went from having my parents or myself use the landline to call my friends house to hang out. Nowadays landlines are a thing of the past. Everyone has their own phone to call or text. And that's only with connections with other people. The article mentions how the idea of “self” has changed and I totally agree with it. Using social media as a young kid I only tried to post the things that would make me look the coolest. I had to post things I normally wouldn’t because I wanted to fit in. The article also mentions “avatars” which immediately made me think of an old video game I used to play called Destiny. I put in so many hours into that game and made friends with random people all over the world just through a video game voice chat. I played that game so much my character became an extension of me. I wanted people to think this is what I look like in real life while wearing space armor. It is crazy to think about how many people have changed the way they live because of social media.
